Post War Career: President of Washington College
Lee was willing to take risks and make unpredictable move to throw Union forces off balance. He launched a series of clashes known as Seven Days' Battles that forced the Union army to retreat from near Richmond. Lee saved Richmond and forced McClellan to retreat. Lost the Battle of Antietam. His northward advance had been stopped. He lost the Battle of Gettysburg. April 9, 1865 Lee surrendered to Grant in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia.
