The average soldier carried a muzzle with a bayonet. The Cavalrymen were armed with breech loading carbines, sabers, and pistols. Union soldier ate meat and bread, the meat was either salted pork or fresh beef. The Confederate soldiers ate bacon, cornmeal, molasses, peas, tobacco, vegetables and rice. Northern soldiers were called "Butternuts" because of the tan-grey color of their uniform. The Southern soldier's uniforms were grey and brown. Sanitation in the camps was terrible which led to sickness and disease. Discipline in the army was tough. Petty offenses were usually treated with extra duties like digging holes or standing longer on guard duty. More serious offenses were dealt with embarrassing punishments. Crimes committed against civilians were punishable by death by hanging.The Union soldiers average age was about 26 years old, no one is sure about the Confederates average age.
