Lincoln liked General Ulysses S. Grant. He was bold and restless and wanted to be on attack. Grant led an assault force into Tennessee that took 2 outposts on key rivers in the west. He captured Fort Henry and took Fort Donelson. Grant led the battle of Shiloh and came out victorious. He took the city of Vicksburg, which was an important step towards winning the Civil War. Union won the Civil War under his leadership, when Lee surrendered to him.
